What To Do on a Houseboat at Shasta Lake

Once you’ve arranged for a houseboat rental on Shasta Lake, it’s time to dream about what you’re actually going to do when you finally get away. Houseboat rentals can accommodate a wide variety of exciting, fun, relaxing, and rejuvenating activities. Plus, they provide a great way for families and friends to reconnect.

Water Sports

Chances are, some of the folks on your boat love a good swim or float in the lake. Some houseboats have swim slides, which make this especially fun. And with a houseboat, you can find a secluded cove on the lake and dive in. You may even luck out with a swim area all to yourselves. Compare that to going to a beach with a thousand other people on it. There’s just no comparison.

Have you dreamed of exploring on a canoe or kayak? Sometimes, you can rent these from the same marina where you rented your houseboat. The wild adventurers in your party might also want to try out some skis or wakeboards. Have they ever tried sky skis? These skis stay above the water and even enable flips in the air (but don’t try the flips if you’re just starting out). Of course, you’ll need to bring a speedboat or rent one for the occasion.

Fishing

There’s no better time to indulge in some fishing than when you’re on a houseboat. With a houseboat, you can boat your way to the best fishing spots on the lake. If the fish aren’t biting in one spot, you can easily move your entire camp to another one. You can choose whether you want to rent a fishing boat from the marina or if you just want to fish directly from the houseboat. Either option works. If you fish from the houseboat, you can get out of the hot sun now and then or fish at odd times of the day or night while everyone else is sleeping or resting.

Hiking

On a lake like Shasta Lake, there are an abundant number of hiking trails, waterfalls, and other natural landmarks to be explored, and some of these are only accessible by boat. That means you might get to explore the mountainous landscape with just your group. You can dock your boat at the spot closest to the trailhead and enjoy a few hours of traipsing through the countryside.

Games & Other Pastimes

No list of possible houseboat activities is complete without activities that can actually be done on the boat. In normal life, it may be difficult to get everybody together to enjoy a rollicking game of Apples to Apples or an all-out Checkers competition. So dust off all of your favorite games and plan for at least one old-fashioned game night. Games have a way of bringing together people of all ages.

Perhaps Aunt Myrtle wants to break out her latest crafting project and teach a few of the nieces and nephews how to do it too. Or you could bring a special recipe and ingredients to make together (fresh chocolate chip cookies, anyone?) You could also bring your favorite books and have a storytelling session at dusk.

This list is only the beginning. If it involves water or it’s an activity that can be done in a houseboat living room, you can find lots of ways to make the most of your houseboat vacation.
