Things to Do Around Shasta Lake

Explore the region’s geological history by touring the large stretch of underground caverns that border Shasta Lake. The Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark offers tours of the incredible network of limestone caves. The year around tours trace the geological formations of 32 different caves back 250 million years. The tours begin with a catamaran cruise across the lake and include a bus ride to the entrance and an informative guided tour.

Don’t miss a visit to the great 602-foot-tall Shasta Dam. You will see the inspiration behind the song “This Land is Your Land” that Woody Guthrie wrote while he worked on the dam’s arch barrier. Completed in 1945, it was the world’s second-highest dam behind the Hoover Dam. Learn about the dam’s purpose, history, and construction at the visitor center, and take a 428-foot elevator ride through the dam to see how it works. You can also picnic on the lawns and explore the trails that line the dam’s base.

Hiking, mountain biking, and fishing are popular outdoor sports around Shasta Lake all year long. Numerous hiking trails offer stunning views and natural wildlife. Hike the Bailey Trail that follows the lower arm of the lake around a mountain peninsula through lush forests. Or take the 7.5-mile Clikapudi Trail with shoreline access. Mountain bikers enjoy the challenging terrain along the Packers Bay Trails and the Dry Creek Trail. Both have expansive views of the lake.

Shasta Lake has some of the region’s best fishing. The 350 miles of shoreline has a plethora of quiet, secluded coves to dock your houseboat for idyllic fishing away from the summer crowds. There are also excellent fishing spots for shoreline fishing at the Shasta Dam, Silverthorne, and Jones Valley. Motorized and non-motorized boats can be rented at both public and commercial boat ramps. Anglers catch a variety of fish including rainbow trout, brown trout, bass, Chinook salmon, crappie, and catfish.

So as you can see, there is so much to do at Shasta Lake. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to reserve your houseboat for a fun Summer 2021 experience.
